Dachshund Health: Protecting Their Back and Preventing IVDD

Dachshunds are wonderful, but their long backs come with a real health consideration: **Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD)**. The good news — thoughtful daily habits dramatically reduce risk.
## What IVDD is
IVDD is when the discs between spinal vertebrae bulge or rupture, causing pain or paralysis. Roughly 1 in 4 dachshunds is affected in their lifetime.
## The five back-safety rules
1. **No jumping off furniture** — use ramps or stairs for couches and beds.
2. **Support the back when lifting** — one hand under the chest, one under the hindquarters.
3. **Keep weight in check** — every extra pound stresses the spine.
4. **Skip stairs when possible** — carry small puppies up and down.
5. **Use a harness, never a collar-only** — for walks.
## Warning signs to watch for
Sudden reluctance to jump, arched back, shivering, wobbly hind legs, or crying when picked up. Get to a vet immediately — early treatment matters.
## Insurance is a smart investment
Pet insurance that covers IVDD can be a lifesaver. Ask about it before you need it.
