Feeding Your Dachshund: A Complete Nutrition Guide

Nutrition is the foundation of a healthy, long-lived dachshund. Here's how to get it right.
## Puppy portions (8 weeks–12 months)
- 8–12 weeks: 3 small meals a day
- 3–6 months: 3 meals a day, slightly larger
- 6–12 months: transition to 2 meals a day
Feed a high-quality small-breed puppy food. Follow the bag's weight-based chart and adjust for body condition.
## Adult feeding
Most adult mini dachshunds thrive on ½ to 1 cup of quality kibble per day, split into two meals. Active dogs may need more.
## The weight rule
You should be able to feel (but not see) your dachshund's ribs. A tucked waist when viewed from above is ideal. Even a pound of extra weight increases IVDD risk.
## Foods to avoid
Grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, chocolate, xylitol, cooked bones, and fatty scraps. Bacon and cheese are irresistible to dachshunds — and terrible for their waistline.
## Treats
Keep treats to under 10% of daily calories. Use single-ingredient options like freeze-dried liver or small pieces of carrot.
